Homework #2

In class students will create various types of lines experimenting with various tools, marks, qualities
of line such as thick/ thin, even/ uneven, broken, intersecting, fast/ slow, curved, rough, clean, straight,
dripping, or repeated. As you create these lines think about how the variations affect your reading and
interpretation of the line itself created. Ask yourself:

What kind of motion is created?
Is this a quick reading or slow or rather, how does the eye travel over the page and follow the line?
What type of mood is conveyed by the line? Is this a universal reading or mor4e subjective? Why?
How does the line interact with the edge of the page?
How does the line interact itself?
What kind of tension or noise is created?
What kind of energy is created by the line?
Is it rough, clean, how would you describe the line? What mood does it convey?

Once each student has made 10 to 15 different line experiments they hang them around the room so their
peers can study and discuss the drawings. After looking over the different lines students should photograph
various peer’s lines from the drawings around the room. You can photograph portions of the whole of the lines.
Experiment with different levels of zoom and detail. Try to get a good variety. Take somewhere between 40 and
50 photos so you have plenty of material to work with. In addition  I would like you to take 20 more photos
outside of class of lines you find interesting in our day to day lives. These can be in your room, liacourse walk,
center city, or wherever you find interesting lines. Don’t screen grab or go online for these take the photos yourself
as you move about throughout the day.

Once you have photos to work with you will create two collages. One static, one dynamic. Use the 9 x 11 bristol
pads and glue sticks or craft glue for base of these collages. You will then cut and paste different aspects of these
photos to create your new image. You do not need to print all the photos but I would like you to use a t least 20
per collage., pick your favorite after spending some time studying them. Please use only black and white imagery.
Make sure you consider composing the entire page in each collage. Think about how the eye is moved throughout
the piece. Think about the Visual Dynamics reading from homework. Stop and consider as you work. Change a
decision if it is not working. I would like you to use at least 20 photos per collage. Feel free to use more if desired.
These collages will be due 1/23.

Proposal for Project to be discussed in class

You are strongly encouraged to attend Buy Shaver’s Book binding demo Friday

Using only mark and shape (nonrepresentational form) create an accordion book with
imagery that tells a story of or shows transformation. Before you begin choose a formal
theme and do a loose thumbnail drawing of the book. Consider that the layout should be
interesting both page to page and as a whole. Also measure out a folder with a spine for the
book. The cover may remain untouched or 'blank'.

Make a well made 12 x 8.25 mockup of your potential layout considering concepts from the
in class layout talk. These are not sketches and should be as finished as possible. Use
markers, pens, or paint. No pencil or colored pencil.

Use grids to line up elements in your designs, it is important that you build visual relationships
in your page designs. Consider color palette, hierarchy, emphasis, scale as well as all other
elements and principles of design.

Also bring color palettes for this project to class printed or painted it should be applied to your
mockup. Please think about color harmonies and contrasts. You may use an online color
generator website to develop these.

Next class is a work day. Bring everything you need to work in class. Your files need to be at
the printer by next Thursday at the latest. This means you DO NOT have next weekend to
work on your project. You need to take photos and use this weekend to do the image
collecting and building necessary to get to work on Monday.

The projects will be due on April 9th but need to be done by April 5th so that you an get
them to the printer.

The Milk&Honey ampersand homework will be collected on Monday for a grade. You must
have twenty sketches & one that is well drawn and highly considered at a larger scale (10x10).
Make sure you are reviewing the blog before executing the homework.

For Monday finish the facetrace images strted in class.  You can eamil me a .jpg of the finished image or print it in the output center. Illustrator > File > Export as... > .jpg

You also need to bring me a more in depth proposal. This needs to be a physical representation of your thought process so far. It can be hand drawn or painted and does not need to be highly finished but should be well prepared and thought through to this point in the process. It will go up on the wall so it needs to be presentable. It will be graded.
